Jeremy Beadle died yesterday, co-incidently in the same week that my next door neighbour's 35 year old son was buried. Both men had died from similar diseases and left children behind...additionally, what these two men had in common was that I knew them both only superficially..I knew of them..I had met neither and knew little or nothing of their life, likes, dislikes or personalities...yet the death of one is front page news communicated to tens of millions...whilst the sad passing of the other is known only to maybe a hundred friends and family and this got me thinking..how many of the millions who read today's papers actually gave a shit about Jeremy's death...sure there'll be loads of anecdotal stories from has-been luvvies and some re-runs of his shows but for most of us it may register for a nano-second and then he'll be forgotten..except by those who really mattered to him...and this is exactly the same for my neighbour.
My point is...how necessary therefore are all the front page headlines..and how are they received by grieving families...especially when each paper tries to outdo the other with inane 'Game for a Laugh' , 'Beadle's About' or 'You've been Framed' catchphrases in their stories..
Maybe it's just me...
